Oliver Rackham's Memorial Stone

Oliver Rackham's beautiful memorial stone has been completed and set in the chapel floor, where it is available for all to see.

The stone will be dedicated at Evensong on Sunday 18 October (6.00 pm).

The stone  was carved by Mark Bury, son of our late Fellow Patrick Bury (1908-1987). It features an image of a Campanula, discovered by Oliver. The sketch from which the carving was made was done by his friend and colleague, Jennifer Moody. Perilous autumnal expeditions to a remote gorge on the island of Kithyra were made by Oliver and Jennifer to view this rare bloom in situ.  It is hoped that it will be named Campanula rackhamii, if it is found to be a new species.

This is the Latin inscription followed by a translation: FLOREAT MEMORIA OLIVERI RACKHAM EXC. ORD. IMP. BRIT. ADSCR. PER VNDEQVINQVAGINTA ANNOS HVIVS COLLEGI SOCII PER VNVM MAGISTRI PER OMNEM VITAM AMICI QUI OBIIT DIE XII MENS FEBR ANNO SALUTIS MMXV AETATIS SUAE LXXV.
