Chapel Music and Choir
Music of all kinds has long been at the heart of the College’s life. The College enjoys a distinguished musical tradition, and many notable musicians have been connected with the College, including renowned conductors Sir Mark Elder and Sir Richard Armstrong, composer Ryan Wigglesworth, church musicians Boris Ord, Edward Higginbottom and Richard Shephard, and Proms Director David Pickard.
Today Corpus has a vibrant music scene, in every imaginable genre, with opportunities for anyone interested in performing or listening to fantastic music. The Chapel choir sings regular services in the College Chapel, a graceful and intimate space at the centre of the College. The highlight of the forthcoming term is a three week long December tour to Hong Kong, New Zealand and Singapore.
Singing lessons are provided to members of the choir and organ lessons to Organ Scholars. Other individuals are occasionally supported in their musical tuition, at the discretion of the Senior Tutor and Director of Music. Entry to the choir is by audition, and is open to all members of college. For more details please contact the Director of Music, details below.
The Bene't Club, the College’s music society, is responsible for arranging and promoting concerts, which include events in the Master’s Lodge, chamber and orchestral performances and other events. The College is fortunate to have a number of world-class facilities at the disposal of its members, including numerous grand pianos, a double Goble harpsichord, and a fine pipe organ in the chapel, all of which can be available to students.
Nick Danks is our Director of Music, and is also a Fellow of the College and Director of Studies in Music. He directs the chapel choir in rehearsals and services and coaches the organ scholars in playing and conducting. At Corpus there is also a strong focus with the choir on vocal technique and performance practice. Corpus is a place where you can take your music further, explore, and most importantly enjoy making music.
The Director of Music is delighted to hear from prospective and current students who wish to find out more about any aspect of music at Corpus, to plan a visit to the College, or for those seeking advice about the choral or organ award application system. Please write to: ned1000@cam.ac.uk
