Commemoration of Benefactors

Today is a special day in the calendar as we celebrate the Commemoration of Benefactors.

College life has been made possible by the collective good will of previous generations of men and women who for nearly seven hundred years have not only joined together to support the scholarly endeavours of College members of their own times but who have also had an eye to supporting the work of the future College and its members.

The day begins with a sung Requiem Eucharist at 08.30 at which we pray for the souls of our Benefactors.

At 18.00 we return to Chapel for the celebratory Commemoration Service and admission of Scholars. Scholars are those students that performed particularly well in the previous year’s examinations. Foundation Scholars are normally six students whose achievement was even more noteworthy – they are selected by the Governing Body. This year, there are eight Foundation Scholars, due to the exceptional performance of students in last year’s exams.

During the Service, the full list of College Benefactors will be read out by the Master, our Scholars are admitted and the Choir will sing John Ireland's grand setting of the Te Deum Laudamus. All members of College are warmly invited to attend. Members of the University attending the Service are asked to wear academical dress.

At 19.00 there will be a tour of the Corpus Chronophage starting from the main entrance. This will be followed by a dinner at 19.30, to which the Scholars and Fellows are invited.
