Bench dedicated in memory of Dr David Maull

Last month, the Master and Fellows were delighted to welcome Mrs Gill Maull, widow of Dr David Maull (m1961) and their grandson, Oliver, to the Fellows' Garden for the dedication of a bench in David's honour.

In dedicating the bench, the current Master, Professor Christopher Kelly, thanked former Master, Professor Haroon Ahmed, for his work leading a bursary fundraising campaign in David’s memory.

With the Fellowship in attendance, Haroon spoke with warmth of David's contributions to teaching and mentoring over the many decades he spent as Director of Studies in Engineering, as a Fellow of the College and as a researcher in the Engineering Department.

Haroon recalled, "David was invariably accompanied by his pipe which he used in many ways. He supervised with an avuncular style and students described to me that he had a particular style very different from mine. They explained that if I did not know something that they asked about I would promise to teach them the topic next week, but when David Maull was challenged he bashed his pipe on the ashtray a few times, filled it with tobacco, then lit the pipe and had a few puffs before picking up his pen and giving a very clear exposition."

"His manner was direct and clear on his point of view often expressed with an understated urbane sense of humour", writes former student Professor Simon Godsill. "On the Governing Body he did not suffer fools gladly and entered the debate infrequently but invariably to very good effect with his views almost always prevailing."

The College has established a bursary in David’s name to support young engineers. To date, 62 donors have contributed over £130,000 to endow The David Maull Bursary in Engineering which will provide a full bursary to a promising engineering student.

Haroon continued, "During the campaign to raise funds for the David Maull Bursary, managed by our very capable Development Director, Rachel and her staff, I received many letters from donors expressing gratitude to Dr Maull."

We are grateful to the generous donors who have honoured David's impact on the College, his students and the Engineering Faculty.
