The Pelican Programme: Physical Sciences Stream Launched

Nominations are now open for the Pelican Programme: Physical Sciences!

The Pelican Programme, Corpus' flagship access scheme, is broadening out into STEM! This year we are trialling a Physical Sciences stream for students who are interested in studying Natural Sciences Physical (Physics & Chemistry) or Engineering here at Cambridge. In addition, to reflect the anniversary of 40 years of women at Corpus, as well as to encourage more women to apply for the Physical Sciences, this programme will be for female students only.

This sustained and intensive programme runs for four-months, with students meeting online in small groups every fortnight to problem solve a variety of questions from the Physical Sciences under the supervision and guidance of a subject expert. Alongside these problem-solving sessions there will be academic lectures where participating students will find out more about the cutting-edge research being conducted here in Cambridge in the field of the Physical Sciences. Every student will also have more admissions-focused sessions with members of the Corpus Admissions Team and, if they successfully complete the programme, will be in a very strong position to make a competitive application to any selective university.

At the end of the programme, those students who have completed it are invited for a short residential event here at Corpus to celebrate their achievement, where they finally get to meet each other in-person, as well as experience working in a real Cambridge lab with some of our academics!

To be eligible, students must meet these criteria:

  • Be a woman in Y12 (or equivalent) at a maintained school in the UK

  • Be on course for A*A*A (or equivalent)

  • Be taking at A-level Maths, Further Maths (if offered), Chemistry and/or Physics

After a nomination has been submitted an email will be sent to both the teacher and student with directions on how to submit their answers to the set questions. These answers will be used alongside the nomination form to decide who to select to participate on the programme.

The deadline to submit nominations and complete the set questions will be 17:00 Friday 23 February and students who have been selected to take part will find out by Monday 4 March.  If you have any queries about the nomination process or the Pelican Programme in general please contact James. Schools can only nominate one student for this programme.
