Professor Paul Hewett

MA PhD (Edinburgh)

Paul Hewett is Professor of Observational Cosmology and Astrophysics at the Institute of Astronomy (http://www.ast.cam.ac.uk) . Paul completed his Ph.D., an investigation into the clustering of faint galaxies, from the University of Edinburgh in 1982 and then moved to the Institute of Astronomy, where he has remained since. His principal research area has been observational cosmology, including the evolution and properties of the quasar population, the nature and distribution of dark matter in the Universe, gravitational lensing, and the development of a broad range of statistical techniques applicable to very large data sets, many of which have found extensive use within astrophysics. Administratively, Paul has looked after the graduate student research programme for much of the last three decades and he has also served as the Deputy Director and Director of the Institute of Astronomy. At Corpus Christi College Paul has been primarily concerned with graduate students. He was Tutor for Advanced Students, responsible for the admission and oversight of the College's 180 graduate students for some nine years. He now holds the office of Graduate Advisor and, in a rather different role, he has held the position of Food and Wine Steward since its inception in 2000.
