Northern Ireland Initiative

Events 2012

The Oxford and Cambridge Conference, now in its fourth year, is once again taking place at the Lagan Valley Island Centre in Lisburn, on Friday 23rd March.  Last  year we were delighted to welcome over 350 AS level students from 47 schools to the Conference. Talks and taster lectures in eight subjects were offered, together with sessions on the application process and interviews. Current undergraduates from Northern Ireland were on hand to talk about their experiences and answer questions.

For further information and to book places please visit the Conference website.

 10th Experiencing Cambridge Summer School

This year's Experiencing Cambridge Summer School takes place 2nd - 4th July.

The main academic focus of the student programme is lectures and seminars delivered by graduate students in a number of subjects. The teacher programme includes the Teacher Information Day which provides opportunities for both new and experienced teachers to update their knowledge about Cambridge admissions and to share their experiences. Social activities include a quiz night and, this year, a barbecue (weather permitting!). Free time for both students and teachers allows participants to sample some of the other treats Cambridge has to offer, such as punting on the River Cam and shopping.

The Initiative has been running since 2002 and offers a popular and varied programme of events for students and teachers. The Initiative's principal aim is to encourage more students from schools and colleges in Northern Ireland to consider applying to Cambridge University. The objectives of the programme are

  • to raise aspirations
  • to provide information, advice and support
  • to guide students towards and through their university applications

If you think you may get 3 A grades at A level, including one A*, then there is a range of activities and events which may be available to you. In Northern Ireland there will be talks, hosted by individual schools, on applying to Cambridge and for the past two years an Oxford and Cambridge Student Conference has been held in Lisburn. There is also an 'Experiencing Cambridge' summer school held in early July at Corpus Christi College which is open to all schools and colleges in Northern Ireland.

Your school or college may have already had a visit and a presentation about applying to Cambridge. Alternatively, your school or college may have been invited to send students to a presentation at a host school in the area. If you have not had the opportunity to hear what Cambridge has to offer you and feel that your school or college would benefit from a visit, then ask your Head of Careers or Oxbridge Co-ordinator to contact Janet Rogers ( or telephone 01223 338056.
