Health & Wellbeing

Keeping Well

The College supports the health and wellbeing of students. Staying healthy and managing stress helps you to focus on your academic work and get the most out of your years in Cambridge. These pages contain helpful resources offered by the College and the University.

Wellbeing & Welfare

The table below sets out the main sources of welfare support for students, together with sources of advice and support for tutors and others. It is not a comprehensive list, but a useful starting point for referral, signposting and advice. The officers below (marked with *) may have important roles in student life in addition to welfare.

Self-care

The first step in dealing with minor ailments is being self-care aware. Many common illnesses, aches and pains can be treated with over-the-counter remedies and plenty of rest. Likewise, there are a core group of actions you can proactively adopt to improve your mental health

The College Nurse

The Corpus College Nurse, Erika Spooner, is available to help both undergraduates and postgraduates with a range of health problems. This includes assessment and advice for minor illnesses and injuries as well as support with welfare and mental health issues. She is able to refer or direct you to more specialised health services if required. Information shared with the College Nurse is treated in strict confidence and will not, bar exceptional circumstances, be divulged to anyone without your consent.

The College Nurse is available during term time from 09.00 - 17.00 Monday, Wednesday and Friday and can be contacted at nurse@corpus.cam.ac.uk or 01223 766265. Her office is in H2.

Doctors and Dentists

See this handy student guide to using NHS services. All students should register with a GP (general practitioner) when they arrive in Cambridge. The nearby GP surgeries used by most Corpus students are:

Trumpington Street Medical Practice is a few doors down from the College's central site at 56 Trumpington Street. If you choose this surgery, please use the main College address (Corpus Christi College, Trumpington Street, Cambridge CB2 1RH). Register online.

Newnham Walk Surgery is closer to Leckhampton. If you choose this surgery, please use the main Leckhampton address (Leckhampton House, 37 Grange Road, Cambridge CB3 9BJ). Register online.

If you are not living in college you may want to register with a surgery nearer your accommodation. You can compare GP practices according to facilities, services, access and performance on the NHS website.

We recommend that students register with a dentist in Cambridge. You can find an NHS dental practice near the College by using the NHS service search.

COVID-19 and other respiratory illnesses

If you have symptoms of a respiratory illness, you are no longer legally required to self-isolate. We advise that you follow public health guidance and try to stay at home if you have a high temperature or feel unwell.

If you need medical advice about your symptoms, you can contact the College nurse, a GP, or NHS 111.

If you have a positive COVID-19 test result, please follow Government guidance

Urgent medical help

Call 111 when you need urgent medical help or advice in non life-threatening situations. You will be asked questions to help the operators triage your needs and direct you to the most appropriate service. If you are in a mental health crisis call 111 and select option 2.

Medical emergencies

In a life-threatening emergency call 999 and contact the Porters on 01223 338000 or 07879 116962. They will summon assistance. The nearest accident and emergency department is at Addenbrooke's Hospital
