Undergraduate gets a taste of life at the Bar

Second year law student Oana Tudor recently completed of a “mini pupillage” at Three Raymond Buildings.

Here she shares the valuable experiences she gained and level of exposure she enjoyed in just three days.

"As someone with a strong interest in pursuing the Criminal Bar, this mini-pupillage gave me valuable practical exposure not only to the daily life of a barrister, but also specifically the inner workings of the criminal justice system. I particularly appreciated how closely it complemented my academic work this year, including my criminal justice paper and the opportunity to engage with issues surrounding international law.

On Day 1, I largely researched the nuances and scope of diplomatic immunity in relation to the inviolability of archives, supporting Mr Matthew Butt KC by analysing relevant case law to build an argument.

On Day 2, I observed Ms Clair Dobbin KC and Ms Rachel Scott KC in a complex extradition hearing at the Royal Courts of Justice. Though I was unfamiliar with the law in this area, it was fascinating to follow, especially when I could draw (to some extent) on concepts from my international law paper.

On Day 3, I shadowed Mr Michael Borrelli KC and Mr Irfan Arif acting as defence counsel at the Old Bailey in a murder trial. This was certainly the highlight of my short time with 3RB, as not only could I apply my understanding of homicide offences to the facts as they slowly unfolded before me, but it was also an exceptional opportunity to observe skilled advocacy from both sides.

Apart from this, what stood out most was the incredibly welcoming and supportive environment at 3RB, as I gained valuable guidance.

A huge thank you to everyone at 3RB who helped to make this mini-pupillage so rewarding!"
