Sir Murray Stuart-Smith (18 November 1927-21 January 2025) Alumnus (m.1948) and Honorary Fellow
The College is saddened to announce the death on 21 January of Sir Murray Stuart-Smith, Honorary Fellow. He matriculated at Corpus in 1948. He took First Class Honours in the Law Tripos and the LLM and was elected a Foundation Scholar. He was called to the Bar by Gray's Inn in 1952, becoming a Bencher in 1977.
Sir Murray was appointed QC in 1970 and served as a judge of the High Court from 1981 and then as a Lord Justice of Appeal from 1988. He was elected as an Honorary Fellow of Corpus in 1994, and was at his death, aside from former Masters, our most senior Honorary Fellow. He was a great supporter of the College, especially through the Nicholas Bacon Law Society. His sons Jeremy (Law, m.1974) and Tom (Natural Sciences, m.1978) Stuart-Smith are also Corpus alumni, as is his grandson Edward 'Ned' Stuart-Smith (Manufacturing Engineering, m.2007).
Tom Stuart-Smith posted a tribute to his father on social media in which he described Sir Murray's love of Shakespeare, his enthusiasm for playing the cello, his skill as a builder, and his love for his wife and family. Tom said, "He was an unstoppable force of energy...My main feeling now is one of immense gratitude".
Sir Murray was predeceased by his wife Joan. He is survived by his children Jeremy, Kate, Mark, Tom, Jane and Elizabeth, and 13 grandchildren.
The College armorial is flown at half-mast today as a mark of respect.
