A quarter century in the Plodge

James teh Porter

There are a few roles within a college community as quietly vital as that of a Porter, and even fewer individuals who dedicate decades to the position. James Pearson has achieved an exceptional 25 years’ service this week as a College Porter at Corpus.

Over the past quarter century, James has watched thousands of Fellows, students, staff and visitors arrive through the college gates and seen six Head Porters come and go — but has always remained a familiar and reassuring presence at the Lodge. From early mornings to late nights, he's at the centre of College life –
offering directions, taking in the post, proffering umbrellas, shepherding baby ducklings across the road, replacing lost keys, providing security and often giving a friendly word of support to students when it’s most needed.

Reflecting on his time at Corpus, James said “It doesn’t feel like I have been here 25 years, I enjoy the job and working with my team to keep the College safe and welcoming. I have met some great students over the years and have lots of great memories”. Those memories stretch back to the early 2000s and, in fact, he'll be greeting by name many of those former students when they return to Corpus for the Beldam Reunion next month.

Head Porter Ben Phillips said, “It is rare for a Porter to do such a length of service, it’s a remarkable achievement and James should be proud of reaching this milestone. His knowledge and experience is invaluable to the Porters Lodge, and his presence is central to the work we do here in the Porters’ team”.

Colleagues describe James as reliable and calm under pressure, and note that often people come to see him for his knowledge of the College’s history and to hear anecdotes about the characters he has known during his time. In short, he is an essential part of what makes Corpus such a welcoming and supportive place to live, work and study.

We thank James for his continued service and support for the College.
