Professor Barak Kushner voices Chinese documentary on postwar Asia

Corpus Fellow, historian and author Professor Barak Kushner features in a new documentary, The Trials of Justice, with Jiangsu TV and Shanghai Jiao Tong University on how justice was found in postwar Asia

The documentary’s release coincides with the 80-year anniversary of the end of WWII in East Asia and forms part of the recalling of history and ideas of justice in the postwar.

The two-part documentary aired in China this week and was filmed in the UK, Japan, and China over the last six months. Both episodes can be viewed via the links below:

Professor Kushner explained: “Much of the background and focus of both shows emerged from my two books on the topic; The Geography of Injustice: East Asia's Battle between Memory and History and Men to Devils, Devils to Men: Japanese War Crimes and Chinese Justice."

Earlier this year Professor Kushner featured in a programme on the Japanese channel NHK World, Outside In Lost in Academia: In Deep with Ramen, which explored the history of ramen as something that emerged from the intersection of Japanese and Chinese history, and investigated the global rise of ramen and what feeds its enduring popularity in Japan and around the world. This documentary is partially based on Barak's 2012 book, Slurp! A culinary and social history of ramen, Japan’s favorite noodle soup.
