Peter Hall (m1950) 7 June 1931-8 September 2023

The College announces with sadness the death of Old Member Peter Hall.

Peter, who studied Engineering, rowed for the Corpus Christi Boat Club and the Cambridge University Boat Club. In 1952 Peter, rowing for Corpus, won the St Neots and Bedford regattas, as well as blades in the Lent Bumps campaign. Peter and Corpus went on to a further triumph that year, winning the Wyfold Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta.

In 1953 Peter rowed stroke in the Boat Race for CUBC when Cambridge beat Oxford by eight lengths, an triumph that was celebrated earlier this year with several 70th anniversary events, including a visit to Henley to meet current Corpus rowers and alumni, and members of this year's winning Boat Race crews (the timing of which was doubly poignant as both dates coincided with Royal Coronations: Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, and King Charles III this year).

Peter kept in touch with his crewmates for the last seven decades, saying, "One of the wonderful things about being a member of the CUBC crew is the friendships that are made. Rowing in the Race is undoubtedly a life changing experience that forges lifelong connections. It was a great privilege to be selected to row for the University and this definitely changed your life and how you behaved in every way for the good of the crew, not for yourself. This bond of team spirit is difficult to explain. But I used that feeling later on in my career consulting with senior management teams on how to gain commitment to a corporate strategy.”

Peter went on to become a naval officer and management consultant before working with his wife, Annabel, in her interior design business.

This summer, Peter sat down with Nick Bliss, Lucy Hall, Captain of the Boats, and Jack Morley, Men's Captain. That conversation will be featured in the upcoming issue of The Pelican. A full obituary will appear in The Record.
