New Chair of Trustees for the Nicholas Bacon Law Fund

At the Michaelmas Term meeting of the Nicholas Bacon Law Fund and, due to the retirement of the outgoing Chair of Trustees of the Nicholas Bacon Law Fund, Lord Mark Bridges (m.1973), the Trustees approved the nomination of Edmund Fetherston-Dilke (m.1988) to the role. Edmund is a partner at Farrers and specialises in agricultural estates work, residential and commercial property. Edmund joins Trustees Will Lawrence (m.2001), a partner at global investment management firm Cambridge Associates, who provides investment advice to the Fund, Senior Tutor Marina Frasca-Spada, and Law Fellow Jonathan Morgan. We would like to express our thanks to Mark for his leadership and oversight of the Fund and welcome Edmund to the new role, which he will take up in the New Year.

More about the NBLF

Following the introduction of tuition fees in 1998, Lord Terence Etherton (m.1969) and other lawyer alumni set up the Nicholas Bacon Fund, primarily for the support of those studying or wishing to study law at Corpus, to alleviate financial hardship. Thanks to the generosity of Corpus Members, substantially boosted by an anonymous legacy from a non-Member, the Fund has been making awards to pay for students’ books and to provide bursaries to help students with their fees and maintenance costs. Within the Fund there are three named bursaries, The Simon Maccoby, The Stuart-Smith Family, and The Fielden bursaries, as well as unnamed support. Donations to the Fund are welcomed and can be made online (on the dropdown menu, select 'other' and enter NBLF).

The Nicholas Bacon Law Society

The NBLS is a student-alumni society, set up in 1971, sponsored by the then-Dean of Chapel Revd Kenneth Routledge. The first Chairman was Robert Upex (m.1968), and the inaugural dinner was attended by Sir Frederick Lawton (m.1930). Lord Etherton became the Society's second Chairman in 1972. For more than fifty years, lawyers at Corpus have been outstandingly loyal to their subject, and to their networking and mentoring responsibilities towards younger generations of Corpuscles. The current Honorary President of the Society is Sir Jeremy Stuart-Smith, and the student Chair is Sophie Palmer. Each year in March there is a student moot competition, networking drinks reception, and dinner. Anyone studying or working in the law can become a member. If you aren’t on the mailing list, please contact the Development Office.
