Corpus Chapel gets acoustic boost with new state-of-the-art sound system

Many visitors to Corpus will have enjoyed the grandeur of the Chapel and we are delighted that it now has a brand-new sound system to ensure the acoustic experience reflects that of the surroundings.

Thanks to the generous donation of Dr John C Taylor OBE (m.1956) visitors and regular congregation members can enjoy great quality sound from any point in the Chapel, while preachers, performers and musicians can ensure their efforts are being heard clearly.

Chaplain, The Revd Dr Matt Bullimore is thrilled with the new technology and the multiple features and benefits it brings, which he describes below.

“There are a range of microphones – fixed ones on a stem on certain stalls, lapel mics, lectern mics and hand-held mics. It allows us to do what we usually do (Eucharist, Evensong) very easily and with suitable amplification using state-of-the-art speakers. But it also allows us a great deal of flexibility for other events – whether they are services, musical events or speaker engagements.

“There are also a number of mic points near the East end of the Chapel for the use of other microphones for musicians. The hearing loop means that we are much more accessible to those with hearing impairment. There is also a Bluetooth facility which means we can also easily play music from connected devices.

“A great feature is the way the speakers time the output, meaning the sound is given directionality. So, if you are speaking from a fixed microphone in the middle of the Chapel it will sound like you are speaking from the middle of Chapel – rather than it just sounding disembodied. Although the Chapel has a good acoustic and one can make oneself heard, this means that speech is not lost and is useful when those not confident in public speaking are involved in activities. It also means that those who talk in there a lot (!) don’t strain their voice. It has already been very positively received by members of the regular congregation as well as those who take services or lead events.”

If you would like to experience the new sound system we have a number of music recitals taking place this term in Chapel, many of which are free to attend. Click on the images below to learn more.
