Corpus beams with Pride
In celebration of Pride Month, Corpus was delighted to hold its second annual Pride event on 4 June, featuring a series of LGBTQ+ talks, followed by a Pride Formal.
Talks were given by Leah Palmer (Scott Polar Research Institute and Corpus postgraduate student) who gave an overview of how queer voices are changing our thinking about the Arctic and Antarctic regions, followed by Robert Pralat (Department of Public Health and Primary Care) who discussed his research into what LGBTQ+ people think about having children, Roan Runge (Department of Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic) who gave a talk on medieval Irish hagiography from a Trans Studies perspective, and lastly Richard Wagenlander (Corpus postgraduate student) who gave a whistlestop tour of Activism, Law and LGBTQ+ Rights.
Following the talks, the Pride Formal was held in Hall with catering staff pulling out all the stops to celebrate the event from a culinary perspective.
The Pride Event was organised by JCR LGBTQ+ Officer Harley Chidley, MCR LGBTQ+ Officer Robbie Waddell and LGBTQ+ Champion Prof. Ewan St. John Smith, and demonstrates how the College’s EDI Team is flourishing.
Reflecting on the event, Harley said, “A lot of organisation went into the event, from reaching out to incredible alumni, to recruiting students to help construct a beautiful balloon arch which was the showstopper of the evening!
“The vibe of hall was immaculate - everyone was super excited to enjoy the delicious rainbow-themed food served up from catering, and our attendees did well to create a comfortable, safe space for our LGBTQ+ family. A big thank you goes out to everyone who made the event so special; a fruitful start to kick off the celebrations this June.”
