Carla Briggs rows for Cambridge University Boat Club at the British Championships

PhD student Carla Briggs joined the development squad of the Cambridge University Boat Club (CUBC) for the 2025 British Rowing Club Championships, held in Nottingham from 18-21 July 2025.

Carla is a biologist based in the Department of Pathology where she uses combinatorial genetics to understand characteristics of the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum merozoites. She hopes to identify new drug and vaccine targets for parastiic diseases.

She has been a strong member of the Corpus Christi Boat Club (CCCBC) since 2022, serving as Women's Captain and competing in the women's first boat. The W1 crew has had great success in the last few years, and narrowly missed out on earning blades at the recent May Bumps.

Carla said of her experience in Nottingham, "The CUBC development squad was split into the openweights (A boat) and lightweights (B boat), and I was lucky enough to be selected to row with the B Boat. We came first in our prelimary race, and then in the final we missed out on a medal by 1 second, but had a great time all the same. Between first and fourth place was only 3.2 seconds, so we were incredibly proud as a lightweight boat to have been able to keep up with the openweight crews."

"We actually raced against Corpus alumnus Oliver Coughlan (m.2022) coxing for a London club!"

Carla proudly sported her Corpus red visor (sitting in 5 seat).  Congratulations to her for another excellent year of rowing, and we can't wait to see what the 2025-26 season brings.
