Corpus Playroom
The Corpus Playroom is a hidden treasure. A place that has, since 1979, enabled many Corpus and Cambridge students to learn and grow theatrically. A space where any student can escape the daily demands of academic life and try their hand at the broad range of skills it takes to stage a performance.
The Corpus Playroom is Cambridge’s primary fringe space. It is home to the College drama society, the Fletcher Players. Expertly managed by the University’s ADC Theatre, the Playroom is also available to, and well used by, students throughout Cambridge. Many well-known stars of stage and screen honed their skills there.
There are, however, some significant shortcomings with the Playroom. It needs renovating and upgrading. It lacks accessibility for all actors and audiences. This denies some the opportunity to participate, and diminishes for all the Playroom’s value as an inclusive space in which to showcase ideas and talent. There is now an opportunity to reimagine and transform this space for the benefit of all, both in Corpus and beyond.
We are seeking planning permission to develop the space, working in conjunction with the local council and relevant regulatory authorities. Desired improvements include new lobby spaces and facilities for actors and audiences. The effect would be to ensure accessibility for a diverse community of users. Improvements to the look and feel of the space would be sympathetic to its significant heritage.
Your role
We are seeking involvement from those who share a passion for the arts and the ability of theatre to enrich students’ lives, both during their time at Cambridge and in later life. The project’s anticipated cost is £2.5 million. If you would like to discuss your interest, please contact Mrs Rachel Lawson, Director of Development, on +44 (0)1223 335492 or rl586@corpus.cam.ac.uk.
