Perceval Maitland Laurence ClassicsEssay Competition 2012 From ‘Chasing Wild Chimpanzees’ to ‘Explaining Autism’Subject Taster Days hit the spot!
On 19th, 20th and 21st March over 80 Year 12 students attended subject taster days in Philosophy, Biological Sciences and the new twin Triposes in HSPS and PBS. Students had travelled from schools across England to find out more about the course and the College. Corpus Directors of Studies gave mini-lectures on a wide and challenging range of topics, and gave subject-specific information on the application process and interviews. The Biological Sciences event included a ‘hands on’ session in one of the University’s teaching labs. Current undergraduates gave the visiting students a tour of the College and took them into the College Hall for lunch, and there were plenty of informal opportunities for questions.
Feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Students’ comments included:
“It really gave me a taste of life at Cambridge and many stereotypes were abolished.”
“I have especially enjoyed the contact with the students and the tour; Corpus Christi is a beautiful place. It seems a lot less intimidating and more of a manageable possibility.”
“Meeting teachers at the college and students who attend here made me more comfortable and confident to apply. The lectures gave a good idea of what to expect on the course.”
“I found the question and answer session about applications particularly useful and also enjoyed being a part of an intense intellectual discussion.”
“I got an idea of the kind of things studied at University level - very different than at A level. Also it was nice to get a feel of the college and the city in general.”
