Leckhampton Wine Club - How to get the best from your £10 in Cambridge

01/03/2012 - 23:30
Location:

Location: Leckhampton Dinning Hall

Sign-up for Leckhampton's biggest wine tasting to date. All are warmly welcome!

Theme: How to get the best from your £10 in Cambridge

Tickets cost £10 and are available to all members of the MCR and their guests. Numbers are only limited by how many we can squeeze into our hall.

The theme of the tasting is value for money - not cheap wine, but good wine at a good price. Wines will vary in price and the idea is to offer everyone the opportunity to find out where the best value for money can be found in Cambridge. If you've ever been disappointed by that £10 bottle from Sainsbury's, and want to do a little better next time, then this is the event for you. Wines from France, Spain, Germany, England (yes its true), America, Australia, New Zealand and my personal favourite South Africa will all be presented, tasted and discussed. The focus will be on fun first, education second and wine snobbery a cruel last! If you like wine I assure you you'll enjoy this event!

Sign ups will close on Monday the 27th to give me a chance to round up the wines. Sign up now!

Location : Leckhampton dining hall

****Now containing free wine****

As part of ‘refreshers week 2012’ Lechampton will be hosting a Pot Luck dinner to showcase the many cuisines of our wonderfully diverse MCR student body. Not just for international students but open to all MCR members, the 21st Jan will give everyone the opportunity to showcase something tasty from their home. Bring a dish, a dessert or a drink from your home country and enjoy something from someone else’s.

Because this is a self catered MCR function, the kitchen has reminded me to say that those cooking/eating must bring along their own glasses, cutlery and crockery. I will ensure that we have a few paper plates and plastic forks available for anyone who forgets, but lets keep it green and save all the fishies.

If you are interested in preparing something please drop me an email to help me manage numbers and culinary diversity.

If your dish contains anything you think other may be allergic to please label it to ensure no eats anything accidently. Alternately, if
you have a severe allergy to something and you'd like it specifically labeled please contact me and I’ll update the website.

Leckhampton Wine Club: Spanish Wine Tasting

19/01/2012 - 23:00
Location:

Location: Warden's meeting room, Leckhampton house

Signup for this event has now closed

For the Leckhampton Wine Club's first tasting of 2012, Clive of the
Cambridge Wine Merchants will be hosting and talking us through the
delights of  Spanish wines, including some sure-fire favourites - Cava
and Rioja. The tasting will take place at 20.30 on Thursday the 19th
of January. Depending on numbers, the venue will be announced later.

Spain is often unfairly overlooked as a producer of quality wine. As
the world's third largest producer Spain offers not only some of the
best value wines available in the UK but also some of the very best.
We will be tasting a wide range of wines from those most commonly
spotted on the shelves of leading supermarkets to those far more rare.
Like the English sparkling wine tasting of 2010, this tasting promises
to be fun, educational and possibly quite surprising to some!  As
always, the club takes a light-hearted approach to wine tasting,
placing wine enjoyment over snobbery. Beginners are always welcome.

The price of the tasting will be £15 pp

Sign ups for the tasting can be made here from mid-day on the 2nd
January. We'll be giving places away in batches of 12. Thus, the first
12 people are guaranteed places. Then, when another 12 people sign up,
they get places too. Unfortunately, our maximum is 24. But if more
than 24 people are signed up, please still register your interest, and
you'll be put on the waiting list. Please note that if you sign up and
are given a place, you are expected to pay if you subsequently
withdraw from the tasting and a replacement cannot be found. Please
note that guest places are limited to one per MCR member.

Location:

The Hall, Old House

The first Postgraduate Super Hall of the academic year will take place on Thursday, 12 January at 7.30 pm. For those of you who aren't in the know, each vacation, when all the undergraduates are away from College, the MCR has a very grand dinner in the main Hall of the Old House. As with past Super Halls, we will be treated to a four-course meal of very good food. We have 120 places to fill, so everyone is encouraged to bring guests (friends, family, labmates, etc.), to show off our fabulous College. Tickets do, however, sell out quickly, so make sure you sign up right away.

The evening will start with drinks in the Pelican Bar (ordinary bar service, not included with the cost of the meal), before dinner is served at 7.30 pm. Following dinner, there will be a cash bar (University cards not accepted) in the Old Combination Room, where a whole host of postpradial delights will be on offer. The dress code for the dinner is as with ordinary Formal Hall: jackets and tie, or equivalent; note also that all University members are expected to wear gowns.

The menu for the dinner is as follows:

Carpaccio of chicken and leek, breaded chicken and mustard nuggets, tarragon emulsion and broccoli cress

or

Gratin of fennel with lemon and herb bread crumbs, red onion mousse, sticky lentils and balsamic caramel

***

Sea bass and lobster terrine with lobster and chilli mayonnaise, parsley purée and pea sprouts

or

Parsley ‘quiche’ with roasted hazelnut, braised red chicory and winter squash salad

***

Pork belly and black pudding ‘presse’, root vegetable boulangere, apple and olive oil purée and roasting juices

or

Milk and bay poached celeriac and shepherd’s pie, root vegetable boulangere, apple and olive oil purée and caramelized shallot

***

‘Coffee and Doughnuts’

Coffee and chocolate mousses, cappuccino espuma served with cinnamon and mixed spice doughnuts

The dinner costs £12.95 for KFC payers, and £14.30 for non-KFC payers and guests. Wine is not included with the meal, but you are welcome to bring your own. When signing up, please remember to stipulate all allergies, dietary requirements, etc., even if you think they won't be affected by the menu given above.

As this event is always very popular, the MCR priority system will be used to ensure a fair allocation of places. Places for the dinner will thus be allocated on the following basis:

  1. MCR members, associate MCR members, plus partners living at Leckhampton.
  2. Other partners.
  3. Other guests. Other guests will be allocated proportionally on a partial first-come, first-served basis (i.e. everyone will be get one ticket on the basis of the order in which they signed up; if tickets are left over after this allocation, we'll go back to the top of the list and work down given people a second ticket, and so on until all tickets are dished out).

Sign-ups for the dinner will close at 7.00 pm on Monday, 9 January 2012. Places will be allocated shortly thereafter.
