JCR Welfare Officers
There is always a Male and Female Welfare Officer because some individuals may feel more comfortable discussing their issues with a member of a certain gender, though by no means does this restrict females to only talking things over with the Female Welfare Officer and males talking to the Male Welfare Officer. The Welfare Officers are here to make sure that you are happy, so please do email them or drop by their rooms at any point, as they’re the people with the tea bags and the biscuits. Cambridge does odd things to all of us at times, but any problems are usually sorted out quite easily when given a fresh perspective.
The corpusWelfare team includes the following JCR committee members. You can find out more information about each post and what these officers do by visiting their information pages. Feel free to contact any of these officers at any time, or indeed any member of the JCR committee, if you have any issue–large or small.
- JCR Male Welfare Officer,
- JCR Female Welfare Officer,
- JCR LBGT Welfare Officer,
- JCR International Students Officer,
- JCR Ethnic Minorities Officer,
- JCR Academic and Access Officer.
The Chaplain
James Buxton lives in Corpus and is readily available to all members of the College at any time, with or without appointment. Students are very welcome to call on him at his room (D4, New Court), to talk to him about anything in confidence, whether or not it is spiritual. James welcomes people just for a friendly chat over a cup of tea, or to go through difficult life questions and problems (also with a cup of tea, or perhaps coffee!), in a non–judgemental atmosphere. The kinds of things people find it helpful to discuss with him range from relationships (e.g. with parents, friends, partners), to future plans and dreams — courses, career, and travel plans (James is a seasoned traveller), as well as religious questions. James has an open–door policy and is here for the whole College community, so it isn’t necessary to be religious or have a big problem to arrange to chat. He also knows what resources are available for personal development within the College and the University.

Or best of all, he is available by calling at D4 or by catching him around College!
The College Counsellor
The College Counsellor, Terry Forbes–Mitchell, has had many years experience of working therapeutically with young people. She is not a member of the University and all communication with her remains completely confidential. As a member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy, she adheres strictly to its ethical guidelines. If you feel you would like to talk with someone who is completely independent of the College and the University please feel free to contact her. She will usually be able to arrange a convenient appointment within 48 hours.

When contacting the College Counsellor by phone, please leave a voicemail and you will be called back. You can also arrange an appointment by speaking to Jan or Pam in the Tutorial Office.
JCR Welfare services
General chats
Although they are not counsellors, the Welfare Officers are happy to help should you need a chat at any time. The Welfare Officers can answer many of your questions, but should they be unable to, they can seek advice from others on your behalf or can point you in the direction of someone else to speak to. You can contact the Welfare Officers by email at any time, or by mobile, or simply by popping to their rooms during the welfare drop in sessions. Any communication between you and the Welfare Officers can be completely confidential if you wish. Should you wish to remain anonymous during this communication, you can also get in touch with the Welfare Officers by simply leaving a note in their pigeonholes.
Drop in sessions
Each week the Welfare Officers will hold drop in sessions in their rooms, most likely during the afternoon for about three hours. As the Welfare Officers’ timetables are subject to change, this may mean the timing of these drop in sessions changes, but you will be informed of this by email and times will be publicised on the welfare notice board in the JCR. Anyone is welcome to drop in at these times to discuss any matters they have, or even stop by just for a general chat. There will usually be tea, coffee, soft drinks and biscuits available to make these chats even more desirable and comfortable for you.
Useful information
The Welfare Officers have information and leaflets on a wide variety of topics which can be passed on to you. Should you require any of this information, please contact the Welfare Officers via an email or a note in the Male or Female Welfare Officers’ pigeonholes. The leaflets include information on contraception, sexual transmitted diseases, drug use, eating disorders, racism, general health, smoking, HIV, alcohol, mental health, sexuality, the Cambridge support groups and many other topics. If the Welfare Officers don’t have the information you require, they will do their best to get this for you as soon as possible.
The Welfare Officers have also condensed down information from these leaflets into a useful Sexual Health and Welfare booklet, that you’ll have received in Freshers’ Week and a phone number list, that can be found on the back of every toilet door in College.
Contraception
The JCR Welfare Officers purchase contraception from CUSU to sell on to Corpus students at a much cheaper price than it is available in the shops. For your convenience, there is also a condom machine in the Old Court toilet block. Click here for more information.
Panther taxis
Having a night out? It’s always advisable to plan your trip home in advance and travel with others where possible. If you’re alone, think about getting a taxi back. If you want to put the cost of your taxi on your College bill to pay it later, Corpus has an account with Panther Taxis. Simply:
- Phone them on 01223 715715 (or directly from the phone in F-staircase),
- Ask to use the Corpus JCR Student Account—account number 0860,
- Give them your name (you’ll need to have your University Card with you so that the taxi driver can prove you are you and haven’t given someone else’s name),
- When asked, give them the password,
- Wait for the taxi and pay for it on your next College bill. Simple.
JCR Mailing lists
LBGT
Corpus has its own confidential LBGT students mailing list. If you would like to subscribe and hear about LBGT swaps, socials, news etc. please click here. Your name is optional and only the JCR LBGT Officer, who administers the list, can see who has signed up and receives emails. If you would like more information, please contact the JCR LBGT Officer.
International students
Corpus also has a confidential mailing list to keep international students up to date with useful information and details about swaps, socials, news etc. All international students (defined as those who live overseas–including Northern Ireland and islands comprising the UK) at Corpus are automatically subscribed to this, but if you think you have been accidentally missed off or would like to receive these emails but don’t meet the definition of “international” for an automatic subscription or would just like more information, please contact the JCR International Students Officer.
