Freshers’ week timetable 2011
There might be some small changes in the next couple of weeks but here it finally is!
This is the timetable of all the events happening to help you settle into life at Corpus and at Cambridge University. Come to as many or as few of the events as you like… but most of all, have fun! You’re only a fresher once! Keep an eye on the blackboard outside the Post Room for any last minute changes.
Please note that events shown in green are compulsory.
Sunday 2nd October
- 10am–12pm: Freshers’ Registration. Come to the JCR Welcome Desk in the Porters’ Lodge (Plodge) and sign your room lease and collect your keys, welcome packs and University Card. Gowns will also be on sale.
- 9am–3pm: Snacks. The Pelican Bar is open for refreshments for freshers and their families. Hall open at 12.00 for lunch if preferred.
- 11am–1pm: Exhibition of the College Silver. In the NCR in New Court.
- 12–2pm: Individual Photos. In the Bacon Room in Old Court. You may want to wear a gown for this.
- 1.30–3pm: Exhibition of the College Silver. In the NCR in New Court.
- 2pm: Matriculation Photo. In Old Court. Gowns and formal dark clothes must be worn.
- 2.30pm: Matriculation Ceremony. In Hall and for freshers only. Gowns and formal dark clothes must be worn.
- 2.30pm: Talk for parents by the Bursar, Admission Tutor and JCR President in the McCrum Theatre.
- 3.00–4pm: Tea. An open house in the Master’s Lodge for families (and freshers following the Matriculation Ceremony).
- 4pm: Goodbyes. It’s time for parents to leave, unless they are attending Evensong.
- 6pm: Evensong. In the Chapel. All are welcome. Gowns and formal dark clothes must be worn by freshers.
- From 7pm: Drinks. In the Master’s Lodge. Gowns and formal dark clothes must be worn.
- 7.30pm: Matriculation Dinner. In Hall. Gowns and formal dark clothes must be worn.
- Followed by: Post-Matric Party in Hall: come and meet the other years around a civilised glass of alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverage.
Monday 3rd October
- 9.30am: Welcome Talks — Round 1. Talks from the Senior Tutor, Admissions Tutor and Tutorial Administrators in the McCrum Lecture Theatre.
- 10.10am: Coffee break. Or tea if you prefer…
- 10.30am: Welcome Talks — Round 2. Talks from the Doctor’s Surgery, JCR Committee and Chaplain in the McCrum Lecture Theatre.
- 11.10am: Introduction to the Libraries. A talk in the McCrum Lecture Theatre.
- 11.30am: Fire Safety. A talk from the Head Porter in the McCrum Lecture Theatre.
- 12.40pm: Tours of the Taylor and Parker Libraries. For Computer Scientists and Natural Scientists.
- 2pm: Options Choices. For Natural Scientists, Computer Scientists and Maths with Computer Science freshers in the McCrum Lecture Theatre.
- 2pm: Tours of the Taylor and Parker Libraries. For ASNaC, Arch and Anth, Classics, Computer Science, Economics, Engineering, History of Art and PPS freshers.
- 2.30pm: Tours of the Taylor and Parker Libraries. For English, Geography, History, Philosophy and Theology freshers.
- 3pm: Tours of the Taylor and Parker Libraries. For Law, Maths, Medicine, MML and AMES freshers.
- 4–6pm: Sports and Societies Fair. Sign up to the College’s sports and societies. Meet in the TV room.
- 5.30–6.30pm: Dinner in Hall. This is earlier than usual. Normally, it’s at 6pm.
- 7pm: JCR Welfare Talk. A humorous look at sexual health and welfare in the McCrum Lecture Theatre.
- Followed by: Tour of the Taps. A trip to some of Cambridge’s many pubs.
Tuesday 4th October
- 11am and 12.30pm: University Sports and Societies Fair. Sign up to the University’s sports and societies (or just pick up lots of free stuff). Meet at the Plodge.
- 1.30 and 3pm: Tours of Cambridge. From cash points to Sainsbury’s, find out where the important stuff is. Meet at the Plodge.
- 4.30pm: “Arts” and “Sciences” Tours. Find out where your departments are. Meet at the Plodge.
- 7.10pm: Evening Punt. Spend an hour being punted down the Cam by 2nd–4th years. Meet at the Plodge.
- 9pm: Ghost Walk. Experience Cambridge’s frights and hauntings… with a twist! Meet at the Plodge.
- 10pm: The Chaplain’s Late Party. Come along to D4, New Court for a party, most likely including some of ABBA’s greatest hits.
Wednesday 5th October
- 12.30: Christian Union’s picnic. Meet at the Plodge.
- 2pm: Walk To Granchester. A 45 min walk. Bring money for a cuppa. Meet at the Plodge.
- 2pm: Boat Club Tubbing Session. Meet at the Plodge.
- 9pm: Cindies Night. A cheesy nightclub. £4 entry. Bring ID and your University Card. Meet at the Plodge, or in the Pelican Bar from 8pm for a drink.
- 9pm: Bad Film Night. Troll 2… so terrible it’s funny! Come to the McCrum.
Thursday 6th October
- Morning: Lectures begin.
- 2pm: JCR Tea and Pool and Darts Tournaments. Come to the Pelican Bar for tea with the JCR Committee and pool and darts tournaments to crown Corpus’ Ultimate Pool Champion.
- Evening: Night in the Pelican Bar.
- 7pm: JCR Open Meeting. Have your say…
- 8pm: Bar Quiz. Compete to win some truly worthless prizes.
- Followed by: Acoustic Night. Relax!
Friday 7th October
- 12pm: Picnic by the Cam. Bring some snacks and relax… unless it’s raining… in which case we’ll relax elsewhere.
- 7.30pm: Formal Hall. Buy your tickets from the Plodge by 12 midday on Thursday 7th. Wear suits (or equivalent) and gowns and please be seated in Hall by 7.30pm.
- 9pm: Back to School Slack. Dust off your old school uniform for a party in the Pelican Bar.
Saturday 8th October
- 1-5pm: Sports Day and BBQ at Leckhampton. Vegetarian food will be available. Meet at the Plodge at 1pm, 1.30pm or 2pm.
- 9pm: Good Film Night. Come to the McCrum.
Sunday 9th October
- 1pm: “Pimp my Bike”. Come to Old Court to learn basic bike maintenance and register your bike with the porters and the police.
- 3.30pm: RAG Scavenger Hunt. £1 to raise money for Cambridge RAG. Meet at the Plodge.
- Evening: Good Music vs. Bad Music.
- 6pm: Evensong. In the Chapel.
- 9pm: Good music vs bad music: Concert in the Master’s Lodge (approx. 30min), along with/followed by: Karaoke in the Pelican Bar.
All Week
- Family Tea Parties. Your College Parents will arrange this with you.
Post-Freshers’ Week
- Tues 11th 7pm: The Corpus LGBTQ society is inviting ALL Freshers to a night of glitz, glam… Okay, maybe not so much glam, but there will be cheesy music and cocktails.So get your swag on and prepare yourselves for the craic! See y’all there!
- Sat 15th 7pm: Welfare Speed Meet in Hall: come and ’speed meet’ students from other years around a cup of tea. Stay on to eat your Saturday take away. Leave with a welfare goody bag.
