Housekeeping

If you have any questions about Housekeeping in Corpus, feel free to contact the JCR Amenities Officer.

Cleaning of student rooms

Before you arrive at the beginning of each term, your room will have been thoroughly cleaned and your bed will have been made.

On your room’s cleaning day (see below to find out what day this is for your room), your Bedder will enter your room to give it a good clean. This includes:

  • Cleaning the sink area,
  • Emptying the bin,
  • Dusting,
  • Vacuuming.

On this day, you need to make sure your floor is tidy to allow vacuuming to take place, otherwise your Bedder may be forced to leave your room dirty.

If you want your bin to be emptied more frequently than once a week, just leave it outside your door. This will also let staff know not to disturb you, with the exception of on the cleaning day when your Bedder will enter your room regardless!

Bottles and other recyclables should not be put into your bin as there are recycling points throughout College.

When you leave your room at the end of the term, you should leave it in a tidy state with your personal belongings stored away and rubbish put into recycling bins or the room bin accordingly. You should also strip your bed linen as you normally would on the cleaning day.

Bed linen exchange service

College provides you with bed linen, consisting of:

  • 1 x single duvet,
  • 1 x pillow,
  • 1 x mattress protector,
  • 1 x pillow protector,
  • 1 x duvet cover,
  • 2 x sheets,
  • 1 x pillowcase.

If you bring any of your own bedding with you, please mark it clearly with your name so that it doesn’t get confused with the linen provided by College.

On your room’s cleaning day, your Bedder will collect your dirty linen (2 x sheets and 1 x pillowcase only) and will leave clean linen behind (2 x sheet and 1 x pillowcase) once the room has been cleaned.

Other linen items, such as the duvet covers and mattress protectors, will be cleaned and changed by the housekeeping staff at the end of every room lease period and again at the beginning of the next room lease period. For those students on the extended room lease, these other linen items will be changed at the same time as for students on the 30-week room lease.

To aid the linen exchange, on the cleaning day you should:

  1. Remove both sheets and the pillowcase from the bed,
  2. Put the sheets into the pillowcase,
  3. Leave the pillowcase next to the bed.

If you haven’t done this by the time your Bedder arrives, you won’t get any clean linen. The only exception to doing this would be if you are really ill or have another valid reason and have notified Housekeeping. If you don’t have a valid reason and don’t strip your bed for two consecutive weeks, you’ll get a £10 fine and the Tutorial Office will be notified.

Accidents

If you have an accident, such as vomiting, a Body Fluids Pack can be obtained from the Porters’ Lodge to help you clear up any mess. In addition, spare bedding packs (1 x duvet cover, 2 x sheets and 1 x pillowcase), spare sheets and spare pillowcases can be provided by the Porters in an emergency. A record will be kept of any spare linen taken, so don’t try and hoard it for slack costumes! If you have any contaminated linen you should bag it up and let your Bedder know before they remove it.

If you spill something solid and don’t want to wait until your next cleaning day to have it cleared up, or if you fancy helping out your Bedder for a change, you can sign out the F–staircase hoover from the Porters’ Lodge.

Cleaning of communal areas

Communal areas in halls of residence (gyp rooms, toilets, bathrooms and staircases) will be cleaned by your Bedder daily, Monday–Friday. You need to make sure these areas are kept tidy so that cleaning can occur. This means you must do your own washing up and removing clean items from the drying areas as quickly as possible. Your Bedder will not do your washing up for you!

More public communal areas such as the Pelican Bar, JCR, Computer Room, Post Room and Taylor Library will also be cleaned daily, Monday–Friday. Again, you need to keep these places tidy so that they can be cleaned. You should:

  • Put your rubbish into the bins provided,
  • Take any recycling to Stable Yard,
  • Leave empty glasses at the glass collection point in the JCR,
  • Leave all communal areas in a respectable state, such that other students, fellows, staff and guests would wish to find them.

It’s not that difficult. Keep College tidy! Otherwise sanctions may be imposed on us all.

Just as a reminder, plates and cutlery should not be removed from Hall, but if it is necessary to do so, you need to return them as soon as possible. You should also not remove irons etc. from the laundry rooms as they are there for use by all of us.

Cleaning days

Below is a list of what rooms will be cleaned and have their linen exchanged on which day. It’s probably easiest to locate your room using “Ctrl + F”! The cleaning day for a room will remain the same throughout the academic year, including the vacation periods for those on the extended lease and anyone remaining in residence on the academic and non–academic rates.

The morning cleaning session begins at 9am and the afternoon cleaning session begins at 1pm. Each bullet point corresponds to one Bedders work for the day and the order they are most likely to clean rooms in, so this should give you some sort of idea as to the time your Bedder will arrive and the time you will need to have stripped your bed by.
