MAY BUMPS DAY 1: Wednesday
Ahoy there rowing Corpuscles,

Well, day one of the infamous Cambridge May Bumps is over with. After weeks of incredibly hard training, rigidly adhered to dietry plans, 2 month drinking bans and weekly 2km tests (hmmmm) we've all made it past the first true test of our rowing pedigree.

The day began with rain - lots of it. The Welsh weather came down on Cambridge with true sheep loving finesse. However, as the Corpus MCR VIII sauntered their way down to the Boathouse, the skies cleared and rays of sunshine shone through the cloud. It had to be a sign. Taking their places in third place in Division 5, hopes were high with a fairly amateur Girton III boat in front. However a nippy looking Jesus IV boat pulled up on the bungline behind to give a slight apprehensive edge to the grad gusto. Such nerves were thrown out on the start however and a comprehensive row saw Girton III fall at 1st Post Corner. Some truly American coxing from one T. Laserson saw Girton swung broadside in the river and Div 5 was claxoned. After much bankside deliberation, the bump was awarded. MCR VIII +1 to P2
Div 5.

The second VIII, clad tastily in purple t-shirts bearing numbers that only an arts student would equate to their positions in the boat, took up Blue Chunder after it was returned sans bow ball by the grads. After a (not quite so) quick repair job they boys were away. Their fashionably uber-late arrival at the bottom of Div 4 was so good one J. Williams asked for an extra minute for everyone to observe their Top Gun-esque flyby to the start. However, this resulted in a ban from the bungline and having to set off instead from the middle of the river. The race also proved short and not quite so sweet; one N. Myler informed a Gaz-ette reporter later that stroke side felt using the atmosphere to drive the boat off the start was much better than using water. Robinson III, having a remote grasp of water-blade relations, disagreed, and a bump ensued. Second VIII -1 to P1
Div 5.

By now it was time for the mighty Corpus women to make one M. Boyd a happy man. Confidence was high prior to the race, with the promise of Clare Hall in front and a fairly shoddy boat full of teachers behind (Homerton II). As the boat cruised past the Plough all eyes turned. As one M. Boyd followed, all stomachs turned. After a fast start and encouraged by the sight of Homerton II disappearing into the distance Corpus W1 set about hunting down Clare Hall with ruthless brutality. Whistles were blown and the gap closed. The ladies, now feeling as though one M. Boyd could be putting more effort into his bank partying, held off the bump at a canvas, forcing their beloved coach into constantly blowing three whistles all the way down the reach. Evil girls. Such was their pleasure in tormenting their whistler that they left the final bump until too late and came home with a respectable row-over. Corpus Womens VIII +-0 to P12 Div 3.

Last, but not least came the brave fighters of the Corpus Mens First VIII. With such a high standard in the crew, trialling for the 5 seat had gone on for the whole term. Only late on did one T. Ang, after a fantastic 6.08 2km time, edge into the boat. Spirits were high on the bank and in the boathouse. A potentially catchable LMBC II boat ahead and a traditionally slow CCAT boat behind. All signs were pointing towards holding station or a bump up. However, the extraordinary amount of PCP in the bodies of G. Hughes and T. Burrows and the extraordinary amount of CULRC stash from J. Williams could not save the crews from some pre-race tension. Nerves were confirmed during the 6-person urinating session on the 4 minute cannon. A fast initial start from Corpus saw them close slightly on Maggie II and pull away from CCAT who experienced the oldest of APU problems on their start - being shit. However, a freak intake this in the Polytechnic saw them actually having some rowers, and a rhythm was built up in the duffers boat that was not matched in the Corpus Genius crew. A brave battle around first post and grassy corners by Corpus was not enough to fight off CCAT, and they fell coming onto Plough reach. Corpus Mens VIII -1 to P9 Div 2.

So an interesting day tomorrow, most notably in the form of Corpus MCR VIII chasing Corpus 2nd VIII for the headship of the hardcore Div 5. Corpus women will be looking to fight off a quick Darwin II crew behind and attempt to bump Clare Hall for the second time. M1 will be looking to retake CCAT with a quick-ish Catz II boat behind them.
