Saturday 10 March 2012 - Lewis Society Coombs Seminar |
|
The Coombs Seminars are named in memory of Professor Robin Coombs, a Fellow of Corpus and one of the outstanding immunologists of the 20th century. These seminars cover a wide range of topics relating to the science and practice of medicine
This year's seminar will be exploring the theme -** Medicine in the developing world** - and will be given by two prominent alumni who will be drawing on their experience in the field.
Dr David Brown, a practising A/E NHS doctor who founded the medical development charity, Mandimba Alliances in Mozambique Africa (MaMA), will be talking on "the difficulty of providing medical development aid in a developing world". He will be drawing on the charity's work in providing US Army-specified field ultrasound machines and training local volunteers to scan pregnant women in an attempt to reduce maternal mortality in a district of Northern Mozambique.
Dr Alexander Duncan MBE has recently returned to the UK after working as a GP for 6 years in a remote area of Afghanistan. His title will be "Mind the Gap; training illiterate women to reduce child mortality in the developing world". He will be talking on running a rural health programme in the region that saw child mortality fall by around 40%
Come learn about these innovative ways of reaching the Millennium Development Goals, the triumphs and the difficulties.
