The Dean of Chapel writes: This is the Lent Term 2011 programme of events meetings and trips, which we have left here so that visitors to the College website can see the kind of things we get up to in Michaelmas and Lent Terms. During the Easter Term, the programme is toned down a bit because people are so busy, but we still do have a couple of day trips, and every week, Bible Study and letter writing for human rights (Amnesty).
FILMS TALKS AND DISCUSSIONS THIS TERM All are welcome to these fascinating events on Monday evenings. This term we are featuring four films that have a thought-provoking faith dimension, on alternate Mondays. Films and meetings begin at 7.30. There will be a short discussion after each film. Drinks and nibbles are provided. Monday 23 January Film CONTACT starring Jodie Foster Addresses issues of science, faith the universe and everything in the context of a sci-fi exploration of life beyond earth. Monday 30 ILLUSTRATED Talk CERTAIN INCREDIBLE OBJECTS Up close with some of the College’s most unusual possessions: Professor Rackham introduces us to fascinating objects which reveal insights into the origins of our College, and the events and people who have shaped it over the centuries. SPECIAL MEETING on Wednesday 1 February 1.15-2.15 in the Parker Room With Lord Glasman of Stoke Newington THE CAMBRIDGE COLLEGE, CHRISTIAN TRADITION AND THE POLITICS OF THE COMMON GOOD Maurice Glasman is a Labour life peer and Senior Lecturer in political theory at London Metropolitan University. He is the inventor of the expression ‘Blue Labour’, and his recent critique of the current Labour leadership was widely commented on in the media. Monday 6 February Film DEAD MAN WALKING God, death, hope, truth, right, wrong: This powerful and harrowing film is inspired by the true story of a nun’s relationship with a man on death row. Starring Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn. Monday 13 February TALK AMNESTY. COMPANIES. HUMAN RIGHTS Amnesty International UK Business and Human Rights Manager Peter Frankental will present Amnesty International’s groundbreaking work in campaigning for higher levels of corporate responsibility in international business and industry. Monday 20 February Film THE MATRIX What is reality? What is truth? A computer hacker (Keanu Reeves) discovers his whole reality is a virtual world run by a malicious cyber-entity. The film invites us to contemplate our true identity, and what it would take to be truly free. Monday 27 February ILLUSTRATED TALK ETHIOPIA BEYOND STEREOTYPE An incredibly beautiful country with a rich cultural, spiritual and political culture, unique in Africa, lies beyond the familiar images of poverty and desolation. James Buxton and John Binns who are leading the College trip to Ethiopia in September (see overleaf) give their impressions. All are welcome at this event, whether or not you are planning to come in September. Monday 5 March Film JESUS OF MONTREAL Gripping tale of a twentieth century passion play, starring Lothaire Bluteau Presenting a caustic portrait of the emptiness of conspicuous consumption, celebrity hood, advertising, sexism, the media, this film also offers a searing critique of the institutional churches. Monday 12 March DISCUSSION CHRISTIAN CONTROVERSIES A discussion of controversial issues for the Anglican Communion and Christians generally, some of which have been raised in last week’s film and in Sunday sermons this term. For starters the confusions about: Women Bishops, homosexuality, faith and wealth… DAY OUT IN LONDON SATURDAY 28 JANUARY ROYAL MANUSCRIPTS AT THE BRITISH LIBRARY WESTMINSTER ABBEY EVENSONG AND TOUR On this day-trip we visit the sensational Royal Manuscript Exhibition at the British Library with our own Dr de Hamel, Parker Librarian. For further information go to www.bl.uk/whatson/exhibitions/index.html.After lunch we will attend Choral Evensong at 3.00 followed by free private tour of the Abbey (www.westminster-abbey.org), including visit to the seldom seen shrine of St Edward the Confessor (spectacular c14 shrine, closed to the public), and the tombs of some of those whose manuscripts we saw earlier. Early evening: Have curry at the Dhiwana Bel Poori House (South Indian food), Drummond Street, Euston. SPRING WALK WITH PUB LUNCH SATURDAY 25 FEBRUARY SPRING WALK AND PUB LUNCH IN RURAL NORTH CAMBRIDGESHIRE. Keep the date free!
ETHIOPIA 2012 2-20 September 2012 This is a once in a life time opportunity to visit Ethiopia. On this Corpus trip, we will · Visit cultural treasures such as the incredible rock hewn churches at Lalibella, and the island monasteries of Lake Tana (source of the Blue Nile). · Trek in the Simien Mountains and catch up with the Galada Baboons. · Experience community development work with first class Ethiopian NGO ‘Partners for Change’, at Bahir Dar. · Immerse ourselves in Ethiopian antiquities and culture at Gondar, the old imperial capital of Ethiopia.
