Corpus awards Organ Scholarships and Choral Exhibitions

Organ Scholarships

The two Organ Scholars play an important role in the life of the Chapel and College as they:

  • Select music for services each term, with the Dean's approval;
  • Organise singing lessons, recitals, tours and generally ensure the excellence and smooth running of the choir;
  • Help stimulate music in College generally.

Benefits include: a scholarship of £300 pa, organ lessons each term, spacious rooms with grand pianos.

The College has a fine 3 manual Mander organ built in 1968 and restored in 1997 by David Wells Organ Builders of Liverpool.

Applications for Organ Scholarships and Choral Awards

Applications for these must be made on the white form before the beginning of September in the year before you plan to come up, in other words, six weeks before the deadline for the blue application form. An Organ applicant who is accepted then has no more interviews. A Choral applicant who is successful must still have academic interviews in December. An unsuccessful organ or choral applicant will not be disadvantaged in his or her chance of an academic place. Make sure that you get your white application form from the Admissions Office in good time.

Choral Exhibitioners

Choral exhibitioners are elected to sing at Sunday services in Chapel, one weekday service and at special services arising from time to time. Currently these services are: on Sundays Holy Communion and Evensong, and Evensong on Wednesdays. Exhibitioners must also be present at rehearsals, currently held on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

Exhibitioners are elected for their full three or four years of undergraduate study, and are awarded £100 per year, with singing lessons paid for by the College (4 per term) and dinners provided by the College.

The Choir is augmented by ordinary members of the College, who are auditioned. Choir members who are not Exhibitioners have half their singing tuition paid for by the College (4 lessons per term).

Further financial assistance for tuition in singing may be available at the discretion of the Chaplain or the Senior Tutor.
